Specialized Tarmac Recall

Tuesday 12 October 2021 Filed in: General

Dear Specialized Rider,

Based on a small amount of warranty reports in the field, we are voluntarily recalling Tarmac SL7 bicycles and framesets to replace some headset components and strengthen the performance of the overall system.

AFFECTED PRODUCT: All Tarmac SL7 bicycles and framesets sold and delivered prior to the announcement of this recall (July 2020 – August 2021). "Tarmac" is written on the back of the bicycle's seat tube. SL7 models can be distinguished from older generation Tarmac models by their integrated (hidden) cable routing through the headset (see photo above). Please visit www.specialized.com/safety-notices for more details.

REASON FOR THIS RECALL: Harsh frontal impacts, e.g., impacting a deep pothole with significant force, may put extraordinary stress on headset components and may initiate a crack in the fork's steerer tube. A damaged fork may break if continued to be used, posing fall and injury hazards.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I HAVE AN AFFECTED BICYCLE: Stop riding and bring it to your nearest Authorized Specialized Retailer. Your retailer will replace the current expander plug with a new extended expander plug and upgrade the compression ring to the newer-style two-piece compression ring if your bike is not already equipped with one. All of that will strengthen the performance of the overall system and increase its resistance against frontal impacts, making sure you can safely enjoy your Tarmac SL7.
